However, with the growing awareness of environmental issues and the rapid development of technology, the sector is undergoing significant changes. In 2022, total EU road freight transport accounted for more than 13.6 billion tonnes and 1,920 billion tonne-kilometres (<a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/eurostat\/statistics-explained\/index.php?title=Road_freight_transport_statistics\">Eurostat<\/a>).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 17px;\">An overview of the current situation of road transport would not be sufficient without considering its contribution to global CO2 emissions. Therefore, this section will discuss the challenges and issues currently facing the sector, such as congestion, pollution and safety concerns.<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column]<div class=\"porto-u-heading  wpb_custom_95aa9a11c17ad45cfabaf210d84ee7cc porto-u-55ca8359258f9a412be7e73af65d2aac \"><div class=\"porto-u-main-heading\"><h2  >The Impact of Sustainability on Road Transport<\/h2><\/div><style>.porto-u-55ca8359258f9a412be7e73af65d2aac.porto-u-heading{text-align:center}<\/style><\/div>[vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 17px;\">Sustainability is becoming an increasingly important factor in all aspects of society, and road transport is no exception. Sustainability is influencing the sector, from the push for electric vehicles to the development of more efficient supply chain systems.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 17px;\">Transport is adapting to new developments and looking for ways to reduce its impact on the environment while enhancing the human working environment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 17px;\">The data show that over the last three decades, transport is the only sector where greenhouse gas emissions have increased. In particular, an increase of 33.5% was recorded between 1990 and 2019 (European Parliament, 2019). As can be seen from the trend, reducing CO2 emissions from transport will not be easy as the rate of emission reduction has slowed down. Electric vehicles offer a promising mobility option while environmentally friendly ships powered by batteries, wind energy, solar electricity or alternative fossil fuels are becoming increasingly competitive.
